Mangaluru, July 17 -- A 21-year-old woman was hacked to death with a sword at a busy KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal town of Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday evening in a brutal attack that unfolded before commuters.

The accused, who allegedly consumed rat poison in an apparent bid to evade arrest after the murder, was traced and taken into police custody on Friday while undergoing treatment at a government hospital.

The victim, identified as Lavanya, was waiting for a bus at the BC Road KSRTC New Bus Stand when the accused, Chethan, allegedly waylaid her and repeatedly assaulted her with a sword.
