Akola, June 11 -- : A woman and her minor son died after being swept away in the Katepurna river near Shamsherpur village in Maharashtra's Akola district on Thursday, while two other women were rescued, police said.

The incident occurred around 10 am near Shamsherpur in Murtizapur tehsil when three women and a boy had gone to the river for bathing and worship linked to the "Adhik Maas" observance, officials said.

Initial reports suggest they may have misjudged the water depth.

The deceased were identified as Vrushali Haridas Khot (35) and her son Swaraj Haridas Khot (10).

The other two women, identified as Madhuri Umesh Khot and Meera Shyamsundar Chaudhary, were rescued and admitted to Akola General Hospital for treatment.
