Madikeri, July 28 -- A female wild elephant was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a private coffee plantation in Kodagu district on Tuesday, prompting the Forest Department to launch an investigation, while an orphaned calf found beside the carcass was rescued by officials.
The elephant's carcass was spotted at Kaurikadu Estate near Anandpur in Virajpet taluk after estate workers and local residents noticed a young calf crying and refusing to leave its mother's side. They immediately alerted the Forest Department.
A team of forest officials, veterinarians and field staff rushed to the spot, cordoned off the area and conducted a preliminary inspection before initiating procedures for a detailed post-mortem examination.
