Sullia (Karnataka), April 13 -- A wild elephant that strayed into a habitation area near Peraje in Sullia taluk has fallen into an abandoned open well, triggering a major rescue operation by the Forest Department and fire and emergency services.

The incident occurred late Sunday night at Kalcharpe near Peraje, when the elephant reportedly lost balance and fell into the deep well while moving through the forest-fringe region in search of food. Locals discovered the trapped animal on Monday morning after hearing distress sounds from the site.
