Kolkata, June 1 -- A statewide free bus travel scheme for women came into effect on Monday, fulfilling a key electoral promise made by the BJP before coming to power in West Bengal.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had announced after the formation of the government that the scheme would be implemented from June 1.
Accordingly, women passengers travelling on state-run buses across the state are no longer required to pay fares.
Under the new system, women boarding government buses are being issued "zero-value" tickets instead of regular fare tickets.
The facility is available throughout the state, from northern districts to southern regions, and covers both short-distance and long-distance routes.
