Siliguri, Sept. 12 -- The water level of the Ganga at Manikchak ghat in Malda started receding on Saturday, bringing relief to residents and the district administration after a sharp rise in the river had caused concern across several parts of the district.

At around 4 p.m. on Saturday, the river was flowing at 26.03 metres at Manikchak, down from 26.09 metres earlier.

Irrigation officials said the level was steady and expressed hope that it would continue to recede over the next two days. The river, however, remained around 73 cm above the extreme danger level.

The rise in the Ganga had affected several low-lying and unprotected areas in Ratua, Manikchak, Kaliachak-II, Kaliachak-III and parts of English Bazar. Bhutni Diara in Manikchak ...
