Kolkata, March 14 -- The Election Commission of India has sought an urgent report from the Kolkata Police over the alleged clash between supporters of the All India Trinamul Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Girish Park in north Kolkata today, expressing concern over the alleged inaction of police personnel present at the spot.

Sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said the Commission has asked the city police commissioner to explain why law and order could not be effectively maintained despite the presence of police during the incident, at a time when a major rally of Prime Minster Narendra Modi was being held in city.
