Bengaluru, June 18 -- Voting began on Thursday for the election to seven Karnataka Legislative Council seats, with the ruling Congress and the BJP-JD(S) alliance locked in a high-stakes battle for the crucial seventh seat amid intense political manoeuvring and fears of cross-voting.

Polling started at 9 am at the Vidhana Soudha and will continue till 4 pm, while counting of votes is scheduled to begin at 5 pm. Eight candidates are contesting for seven vacancies in an election that has assumed significant political importance as it is the first electoral contest for the Congress government after D K Shivakumar took over as Chief Minister.
