Bhubaneswar, Aug. 21 -- Veteran Odia playback singer Pranab Patnaik passed away at a private hospital here on Friday following a prolonged illness. He was 88.

Family sources said Patnaik had been admitted to the hospital after falling ill and succumbed to his condition while undergoing treatment.

A towering figure in Odisha's music and film industry for more than five decades, Patnaik made his playback singing debut in 1958 with the Odia film Maa. He went on to carve out a distinguished career, lending his voice to more than 200 Odia films.
