Tehran, Aug. 10 -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei has appointed former Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) suggesting that country's old guard is consolidating power.
Rezaei, 71, a veteran military commander and prominent regime figure, has been appointed secretary of the SNSC, replacing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, who had held the post since March.
Rezaei has long expressed deep skepticism toward negotiations with the United States, and his appointment signals a potentially harder-line approach to Iran's national security and foreign policy.
