Washington/ Baghdad, July 18 -- The United States welcomed Iraq and Syria's decision to rehabilitate and reconstruct the Iraq-Syria crude oil pipeline, describing it as a key regional infrastructure project that would restore a critical energy corridor linking Iraqi oil production to Mediterranean export markets.

Washington welcomed the two governments' intent to make the project "a priority infrastructure project of bilateral and regional strategic significance,"the US said in a statement.

The State Department said the restored pipeline would have an initial transport capacity of 2 million barrels per day (bpd) and that a U.S.-led international consortium would execute the project's technical and financial aspects.
