Washington, Sept. 9 -- US forces struck five Iranian crude oil tankers, sinking at least one vessel, after Iran twice targeted a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

The strikes mark a fresh escalation between Washington and Tehran, with Iran responding by launching a missile barrage toward Jordan, where the United States operates the key military facility, the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base.

The US forces said it destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers on September 8: the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, and the M/T Derya near Kharg Island, a major hub for Iranian oil exports.
