Washington, Aug. 8 -- The US Senate today approved a stopgap funding bill to keep the federal government operating through December 11, sending the bill to the House while Congress seeks to avoid another government shutdown ahead of the midterm elections.
The bill, passed by a 90-6 vote, would largely maintain existing funding levels, albeit with some exceptions, for six weeks beyond the September 30 end of the fiscal year.
Prior to leaving for its August recess, the House had already approved its own continuing resolution. That bill would also fund the government well into its way to December, though the GOP measure was passed with massive opposition from the Democrats.
