Washington, May 21 -- The US Senate on Tuesday advanced a resolution seeking to limit President Donald Trump's war powers in the ongoing Iran war, giving the Democrats their first procedural win, following seven failed attempts to push similar measures forward.

The senators approved a motion to discharge the resolution from committee in 50-47 vote, allowing it to proceed for further consideration on the Senate floor, reports CBS News.

Four Republicans - Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana - joined the bulk of Democrats in favour of advancing the resolution, while Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the sole Democrat to oppose.
