Moscow, March 5 -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that negotiations between Washington and Tehran had been close to reaching a breakthrough before being disrupted by escalating tensions.
Speaking at an embassy roundtable, Lavrov said talks between the United States and Iran had been ongoing for some time and were nearing success last June. According to him, the negotiations were interrupted shortly before the next round when a 12-day war broke out, which he described as the first act of aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, Sputnik reported.
Lavrov also expressed concern that the ongoing conflict could undermine global nuclear nonproliferation efforts.
