New Delhi, Aug. 17 -- A 60-day deadline set under a US-Iran memorandum of understanding expired on Monday without the two sides reaching a broader agreement to end their war, resolve the dispute over Tehran's nuclear programme or fully reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, leaving the future of the conflict shrouded in uncertainty.
The MOU, signed by US President Donald Trump and Iran on June 17 at Versailles, France, was intended to transform a temporary halt in fighting into a lasting settlement. It provided the two sides with 60 days to negotiate a permanent agreement covering Iran's nuclear programme, the cessation of hostilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
