Washington, June 1 -- The US diplomatic corps is undergoing a rapid brain drain as a record 2,000 career diplomats have left the US Foreign Service via layoffs or forced retirements, since the Trump administration assumed its second term, according to figures cited by the American Foreign Service Association.
This number though, does not include the more than 2,000 staff who lost their jobs when the administration shut down the US Agency for International Development last year.
The departures have left major gaps in many senior diplomatic posts, as nearly 100 US embassies, which is more than half of the country's total foreign missions, are currently operating without a Senate-confirmed ambassador, reports NBC News.
