Washington, Aug. 31 -- The United States and Iran traded attacks overnight into Monday, marking their first direct military escalation in more than a month and raising fears that the conflict could intensify after weeks of relative calm.
The escalation began after US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, where Iranian forces were allegedly preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route at the centre of mounting regional tensions.
Iran responded by firing missiles toward US military targets in Jordan.
