Mumbai, July 3 -- The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today witnessed an unprecedented uproar, as the Opposition and several ruling party members vehemently opposed the state government's move to make 'Smart Metres' mandatory for electricity consumers.
The heated debate was triggered by a calling attention motion moved by Solapur MLAs Devendra Kothe and Bhimrao Tapkir.
Responding to the concerns, Minister of State for Energy, Meghna Bordikar, clarified that while the installation of smart metres is mandatory under current electricity laws, the choice to opt for a 'prepaid' system remains entirely voluntary for consumers.
