Lucknow, March 2 -- Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai on Monday questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the reported martyrdom of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Rai visited Shia-majority areas of old Lucknow to pay tributes and expressed solidarity with the Shia community.

During his visit, he also met senior Indian Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawad and offered condolences.

Addressing the gathering, Rai said that Ayatollah Khamenei chose bravery over surrender and that his martyrdom deserves respect.

However, he strongly criticised the Central government for what he described as an "embarrassing silence" on the issue.
