Lucknow, July 31 -- Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai has written to the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), demanding an independent and impartial investigation into criminal cases filed against journalists, digital media workers, and freelance reporters in Uttar Pradesh, and the Commission's intervention.
In his letter, Mr. Rai stated that freedom of expression and independent journalism, guaranteed under Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution, are the cornerstones of a democratic system.
He stated that if journalists are unable to report fearlessly on issues of public interest, it will adversely impact democratic accountability and citizens' rights.
