Geneva, June 23 -- A United Nations human rights report released on Tuesday documented widespread and systematic sexual violence in Sudan since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023, warning of severe and long-term consequences for victims and communities.
The report said sexual violence has followed the geographic spread of fighting and displacement routes, and has been used as a tactic to terrorise and control civilians.
"As I warned at the end of my mission to Sudan in January, sexual violence is being used as a weapon of war. This is a war crime and, if committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack, a crime against humanity," UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said.
