New York, Sept. 7 -- The UN human rights chief has called for accountability over the growing number of deaths in US immigration custody, urging Washington to stop deporting people to places where they could face "irreparable harm".

Speaking to the UN Human Rights Council on Monday, High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said four more people had died in US immigration custody since his previous update in June.

"That meant there had been a total of 23 deaths in 2026 alone," Turk said, adding that "there needs to be accountability for these deaths".
