New York, Sept. 9 -- The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly opened with Bangladesh's Khalilur Rahman assuming the presidency and placing restoring trust in multilateralism, strengthening global cooperation and reforming the United Nations at the centre of his year-long tenure.

Rahman formally declared the session open at UN Headquarters in New York, taking charge at what he described as a "consequential moment" for the world body as it enters its ninth decade amid wars, geopolitical divisions, fragile development gains, intensifying climate impacts and declining confidence in international institutions.
