Lucknow, Sept. 16 -- The debate over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is gaining momentum in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections after union Home Minister Amit Shah said the BJP-led NDA would seek to implement the code in all 21 NDA-ruled states ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Shah's statement has brought the UCC back into political focus in Uttar Pradesh, where the issue could feature alongside caste equations, employment, inflation, farmers, law and order and social justice in the run-up to the Assembly polls. Shah said on September 13 that he was confident the UCC would be implemented in all 21 BJP-NDA ruled states before 2029.
