Washington/ Tehran, July 16 -- As the United States expands its military campaign against Iran, President Donald Trump is weighing a broader offensive that could include seizing Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export terminal, and striking underground facilities at Pickaxe Mountain believed to be linked to Tehran's nuclear programme, according to US officials.
The deliberations come as Washington seeks to intensify pressure on Iran and weaken its ability to control the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply passes.
Iran, however, has warned that any attempt by the United States to interfere in the strategic waterway would cross a red line.
