Washington, July 14 -- US President Donald Trump has asserted that Washington was now controlling the Strait of Hormuz, as the US intensifies its military operations against Iran for the third consecutive day on Monday.

Speaking to Newsmax, Trump gave a blunt response when asked who controls the strategic waterway, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes.

"We do," Trump said.

His remarks came as tensions escalated following Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and strikes on US assets in the region.

"We control it. They can make trouble. They can do things that are not nice, but we control it," Trump said.
