Chennai, June 18 -- The Tamil Nadu government is taking all legal steps to halt Karnataka from constructing a new dam at Mekedatu across the river Cauvery, while promising firm efforts to prevent Kerala from constructing a new dam and to take up repair works in the Mullaiperiyar dam area to raise the storage level to 152 ft as per the Supreme Court orders, Governor R V Arlekar announced in the State Assembly on Thursday.

Delivering his maiden customary address to the House on the first day of the first session of the new TVK government headed by Chief Minister Vijay, the Governor said the Cauvery delta region is the granary of Tamil Nadu.
