New York, Sept. 7 -- Frances Tiafoe produced a fearless, front-foot display to send fifth seed Daniil Medvedev crashing out of the US Open, defeating the former champion in straight sets and booking his place in the quarterfinals.
The American prevailed 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a gripping fourth-round contest at Louis Armstrong Stadium, repeatedly unsettling Medvedev with aggressive returns, sharp net play and relentless attacking tennis.
Tiafoe survived a tense opening set in which Medvedev had chances to take control. With the Russian unable to serve out the set, Tiafoe seized the opportunity in the tiebreak, racing away 7-1 to draw first blood after a marathon 74-minute opening set.
