Pune, May 30 -- The death toll in the toxic liquor tragedy that rocked Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Hadapsar has risen to 19, prompting swift action from the police department.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has suspended three police officers for alleged negligence and dereliction of duty in connection with the case.
The incident first came to light after eight people died allegedly after consuming spurious liquor in the Phugewadi area. Subsequently, more deaths linked to toxic liquor were reported from Hadapsar, taking the total number of fatalities to 19 so far.
Police have arrested eight accused in the case.
