Hyderabad, Sept. 10 -- Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Wednesday informed the assembly that the State government was undertaking several measures to strengthen the RTC, improve passenger amenities and ensure the welfare of its workforce.

Replying to questions in the Assembly, Ponnam said the Mahalakshmi scheme, launched within 48 hours of the present government assuming office, had significantly increased RTC passenger traffic, particularly among women. So far, 347.47 crore women have availed free travel worth around Rs 12,171 crore.

He said the RTC was procuring 2,936 new buses at a cost of about Rs 1,000 crore, while 240 existing buses had been retrofitted and buses over 15 years old were being phased out. The RTC would...
