Mumbai, Sept. 8 -- A 17-year-old student who scored an outstanding 95.7 per cent in the Class 12 Science examination allegedly died by suicide in Thane after failing to secure admission to the institute of his choice, police said.

The teenager, who resided with his family at Hiranandani Estate in Thane, had reportedly been distressed over his inability to obtain a seat in his preferred institution despite his strong academic performance.

Police said the boy sent a message to the family WhatsApp group expressing his intention to take the extreme step. Before his family members could reach him, he allegedly jumped from the refuge area on the 22nd floor of a residential building.
