Hyderabad, Oct. 2 -- Congress MP Gaddam Vamsi Krishna today called for greater transparency in the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and stronger safeguards for voters' rights, stressing the need to protect democracy and constitutional values.

In a statement here, Vamsi Krishna said the country needed robust democratic institutions, constitutional safeguards and protection of every citizen's right to vote, rather than calls for people to sacrifice their lives for the nation.

Referring to the 2023 law governing the appointment of the CEC, he noted that the selection committee comprises the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.
