New Delhi, June 23 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed a Delhi High Court order directing the premature release of Md Rashid Khan, one of those convicted in the 1993 Bowbazar bomb blast case in West Bengal that killed at least 69 people.

A bench comprising Justice PK Mishra and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva issued the interim stay on Monday while hearing a petition filed by the West Bengal government challenging the high court's decision. The court also issued notice to Khan, seeking his response.

Representing the state, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju argued that the high court had erred in setting aside the decision of the State Sentence Review Board (SRB), which had rejected Khan's plea for early release.
