New Delhi, Sept. 15 -- Indian equity benchmarks reversed their early gains on Tuesday as rising crude oil prices, persistent geopolitical uncertainty and weak global cues triggered selling pressure across the market.

The Sensex ended 777.94 points, or 1.04 per cent, lower at 74,000.86, after swinging sharply during the session. The index had opened on a stronger note but failed to sustain its gains as selling intensified later in the day. It fell as much as 787.73 points, or 1.05 per cent, to 73,994.03 during the session.

The Nifty 50 declined 279.50 points, or 1.19 per cent, to settle at 23,118.60, marking its lowest closing level since April 6 and extending the pressure on Indian equities.
