Varanasi, July 18 -- In the elections held on Friday for six vacant Municipal Corporation Executive Committee seats, the BJP won five seats and the Samajwadi Party (SP) could win just one.
The opposition PDA (Backward, Dalit, Minority) alliance lacked unity, benefiting the BJP. No Congress candidate was elected.
The terms of six of the 12 Municipal Corporation Executive Committee members (four from the BJP and two from the SP) expired on June 27. A House meeting was convened to hold elections for these vacant seats in the Town Hall auditorium in Maidagin under the chairmanship of Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari. After the Speaker's permission, the election process began at 2:26 p.m.
