Bengaluru, Aug. 14 -- Leader of Opposition R Ashoka on Friday cautioned newly elected Karnataka Assembly Speaker GS Patil against allowing political considerations to cast a shadow over the constitutional office, stressing that the Speaker's chair must remain above party lines and function solely in the interests of the House and the Constitution.

Congratulating Patil on his election, Ashoka said the Speaker's office was not a party post but a constitutional position carrying the responsibility of maintaining the dignity, discipline and impartiality of the Assembly.
