Sonbhadra, April 17 -- Local police have taken a major step against the illegal trafficking of codeine-based cough syrup by detaining Bhola Prasad, father of notorious smuggler Shubham Jaiswal, under the PIT-NDPS Act for a period of one year.

The detention order was issued by the state government following a proposal from Superintendent of Police Abhishek Verma and comes into effect from April 15, 2026.

Bhola Prasad, a resident of Varanasi, is accused of diverting codeine-based cough syrup through fake firms and selling it in the black market.

Investigations revealed that large-scale smuggling was carried out using fraudulent billing practices, with the network allegedly extending beyond India's borders.
