Chennai, April 6 -- In a significant development ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Vinoth Gandhi, son of Tamil Nadu Handloms and Textiles Minister R. Gandhi, has withdrawn from contesting the Ranipet constituency in the April 23 Assembly elections, paving the way for his father to enter the poll race.
The ruling DMK initially did not offer Mr Gandhi a ticket and instead nominated his son Vinod Gandhi for the seat.
However, in a sudden change of stand, Vinod decided to opt out of the race on Monday morning to enable his father seek re-election from the seat.
The Minister after holding talks with the DMK High Command filed his papers this afternoon.
