Chandigarh, Aug. 20 -- Ravi Prakash was preparing to return home from Bengaluru after completing an Army promotion course when his family received news of his death.

Two days later, his eight-year-old son Dev lit his funeral pyre in their Haryana village.

Ravi, a soldier of the Rashtriya Rifles, died of a cardiac arrest during physical training on Tuesday. It was also the last day of the course he was attending, after which he was expected to be promoted to havildar.

The 11-year Army veteran was cremated at his native Kasni village in Charkhi Dadri district on Thursday. Army personnel fired a gun salute as villagers gathered to bid farewell, while Ravi's father, Shri Krishna Sangwan, struggled to hold back his tears.
