Belfast, June 26 -- Patience finally met opportunity for Shreyas Iyer on Friday as the stylish middle-order batsman etched his name into India's T20I record books, becoming the country's oldest first-time captain in the format in more than a decade.
When Iyer walked out for the toss against Ireland in the opening T20I at the Civil Service Cricket Club here, it was more than just another leadership assignment.
At 31 years and 202 days, he became only the third-oldest player to captain India for the first time in T20 Internationals, behind Shikhar Dhawan (35 years, 232 days) and Suryakumar Yadav (33 years, 70 days). He is also the oldest Indian to make his T20I captaincy debut since Dhawan.
