Bengaluru, June 18 -- Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar emerged as the key strategist behind the Congress party's impressive performance in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections, as the ruling party secured five of the seven seats, including an additional seat beyond its expected tally, amid cross-voting by BJP legislators.

The election, held on Thursday for seven Council seats, saw all 222 members of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly cast their votes, recording a 100 per cent turnout. Counting commenced at Vidhana Soudha in the evening.
