Bengaluru, Sept. 13 -- Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday invoked the legacy of Bal Gangadhar Tilak to hit out at the BJP over the Ganesh festival controversy, accusing the Opposition of giving a communal colour to a tradition that had historically brought people together.

"Ganesh is not the property of the BJP. This tradition was started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and has continued for generations," Shivakumar told reporters at the KPCC office here.

Accusing the BJP of attempting to provoke communal sentiments around Ganeshotsava, he said the government wanted the festival to be celebrated peacefully and without disruption.
