Pune, Sept. 4 -- NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has condemned the alleged assault on activist Vidyanand Bapat, who had opposed the use of high-volume DJs and other disturbances during Ganeshotsav, saying violence over an expressed opinion was an attack on democracy and fundamental rights.
"I do not know Vidyanand Bapat, but there is meaning in what he has been saying. Festivals should bring happiness to people. The sanctity of a festival is lost because of the noise created by DJs," Pawar said.
Bapat had raised objections to loud DJs and other activities disturbing citizens during a meeting held at the Pune Municipal Corporation auditorium to discuss arrangements for the Ganesh festival.
