London, June 23 -- The return of the global icon has rocked the tennis and sporting worlds over the last two weeks, and Wimbledon officials confirmed that Serena Williams, 44, had been offered a wild card for the singles event.

It's been nearly four years since the USA star's most recent singles chapter, when she "evolved away" - as she put it then - from the sport and held all of New York City in her grips as she won her first two matches at the 2022 US Open, then fell to Ajla Tomljanovic in a gripping three-set battle.

"I need to get to work," Williams said last week in Berlin in a tongue-and-cheek press conference exchange.
