Kanker, March 11 -- An encounter broke out between security forces and Maoist insurgents in the Koylibeda region of Chhattisgarh's Kanker district on Wednesday evening, police said.

The exchange of fire occurred during a search operation launched by a joint team of security personnel after intelligence inputs indicated the presence of armed Maoist cadres in the area.

According to Kanker Superintendent of Police Nikhil Rakhecha, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and other security forces had set out on a combing operation in the dense forests of Koylibeda. As the forces began cordoning off the suspected location, Maoist cadres allegedly opened fire on the advancing team, triggering a brief gun battle.
