Kolkata, Aug. 10 -- In a city accustomed to political rallies, protest marches and public demonstrations almost every other week, thousands of people took over the heart of Kolkata on Monday, walking and waving the Tricolour.

Led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who was flanked by ministers and senior government functionaries, the rally began in front of Akashvani Bhavan near Eden Gardens, before winding its way towards Park Street and culminating in front of the Victoria Memorial.

The rally was organised to promote the Centre's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' (A Tricolour in every home) campaign, which calls on residents to hoist the national flag at their homes as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
