Hyderabad, May 20 -- Rajya Sabha member R Krishnaiah on Wednesday described the Supreme Court's verdict upholding the Centre's decision to conduct a caste census along with the general census as a "historic victory" and hailed it as a major win for the Central Government.

Speaking at a meeting here, Krishnaiah expressed happiness over the dismissal of writ petitions filed by certain upper-caste groups challenging the caste census proposal.

He said the Supreme Court observed that the Central Government's decision to conduct a caste census was a policy matter and made it clear that the judiciary would not interfere in such decisions.
