Bengaluru, July 17 -- Karnataka Legislative Council Deputy Chairman MK Pranesh suffered a major legal and political setback on Friday after the Supreme Court set aside his election from the Chikkamagaluru Local Authorities' constituency and declared Congress candidate AV Gayathri Shanthegowda as the duly elected member following a recount of votes.

The verdict not only unseats the senior BJP leader from the Legislative Council but also strengthens the ruling Congress' position in the 75-member House, taking its tally to 40 members.
