New Delhi, Sept. 28 -- The Supreme Court on Monday took suo motu cognizance of a spate of recent rape cases in Delhi-NCR, including the gangrape of a woman in a park and the alleged sexual assault of a minor aboard a moving sleeper bus in Delhi.
A bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran expressed distress over the recurring incidents and questioned whether law-enforcement mechanisms had made meaningful progress since the 2012 Nirbhaya case.
Referring to the bus incident, which police allegedly failed to intercept during its 47-km journey, the bench said such cases highlighted "a systematic failure" of law enforcement and public authorities to ensure basic public safety.
